The Shed at Martins Memorial Church in Stornoway has been named Best Church Building Project in the Christian Forum Funders Awards.

Opened in 2014, The Shed is the home base for all of the church's youth and community services, offering Stornoway residents a versatile space, where groups can meet, teens can hang out and anyone who needs peace and quiet can find a private spot for reflection or to receive support.

Murdo Maciver, The Shed’s programme manager, was at the London ceremony to accept the award.

He said: "Being nominated was an incredible honour and when I met and heard about all the other amazing projects that are going on around the UK I just felt privileged to be amongst them.

“The awards highlighted that Christian work is still very much needed, is alive and doing amazing work in communities throughout Britain, contrary to what some would have us believe."

Mr Maciver added: “Being the Gold winner in our category was fantastic, humbling and great encouragement for us all in Martins Memorial Church that our work at The Shed has been recognised.

"What started as a vision many years ago is now a working building serving the Stornoway community. It is truly amazing that The Shed is now getting recognition nationally and should encourage other churches who have a heart to serve their community to step out in faith and trust God to make their vision a reality."

The Shed building includes a tuck shop café; pool table; flat screen television with video game console; band practice corner with a fully equipped recording sound desk; flexible meeting area and a small room for quiet discussion.

Martins Memorial Church congregation raised one-third of the £250,000 building cost with additional money coming from external funders.
