The prize for the best overall Christmas display in Stornoway town centre has been presented to the Royal Hotel. They also won the cup for the best hotel / restaurant display.

K J Macdonald, chemist, was awarded the trophy for the best dressed shop window.

Best Christmas window display was Harris Tweed Hebrides while Artisan won the most creative category.

The George Newhall Shield for community public service was awarded to the Lewis Retirement Centre.

Winners of the Santa Dash and character fun run were Cally Paterson, Janice Mackay, Warren Gillies, Darach Cowan and Amy Mackay.

The prizes were presented at the annual Stornoway Christmas lights switch-on ceremony which - despite the freezing weather - was thronging with hundreds of people.

A fireworks display concluded the evening.

The event was run by the Stornoway Amenity Trust which also organises the festive lights brightening up the town centre. Point and Sandwick windfarm along with Tesco and the Western Isles Lottery are paying for this year’s illuminations.

Many town centre premises have festive decorations.

Sub-zero temperatures and a dusting of snow gave the town centre a festive atmosphere.
