Saturday is forecast to bring a lull of sorts in the weather before a gale blows in on Christmas Day.

Winds in the wake of Storm Barbara are expected to remain sufficiently strong through part of Christmas Eve to bring some further disruption to travel, such as delays to ferry services and bridge restrictions, says the Met Office.

Cold unstable westerly air flow brings wintry showers across Scotland.

The freezing conditions mean icy roads and pavements on Friday night and Saturday morning.

Strong westerly winds and thundery showers will continue across northern Scotland for a time on Saturday before slowly easing during the afternoon.
