Pupils from Sgoil Nan Loch on Lewis have sent local hydro workers letters thanking them for fixing powercuts in the January storms.

The youngsters praised the hydro engineers for braving wild weather to reconnect thousands of homes left the the dark.

The P4 and 5 pupils have now been invited to tour the Stornoway power station to see the islands’ back-up generators.

The letters convey the children’s first hand experiences during the storm.

These included a change of sleeping arrangements, playing board games and even a tale of a one pupil’s trampoline being eaten by the neighbour’s cows.

Teacher, Mr Gray, said: “We were doing an exercise on formal and informal style letters. As part of this we felt it would be a nice idea to say thank you to the men and women who helped get the lights back on.

“The children enjoyed sharing details on how they had to adapt life during the power cut and what they did with friends and family to cope.

“They were also excited to get a letter back from SSE thanking them for taking the time to write.”

Kevin Stewart, Western Isles Depot Manager said: “We were all absolutely delighted to receive the thank you letters from the children.

“We really enjoyed reading their kind words and details on what they got up to.”
