Comhairle want cheaper ferry fares now           2/6/14

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar says the planned cheaper fares for the inter-island ferries should be introduced sooner.

The Scottish Government announced ticket prices on the Sound of Barra and the Sound of Harris sea routes are to be slashed.

The fare cuts are included in the announcement to expand the number of routes benefiting from the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) scheme.

The Comhairle’s transport chief John Mackay said: “I am pleased that the Scottish Government is honouring its commitment to introduce RET on the inter-island ferry routes.

“The Comhairle has long made the case that this would be of benefit to our Island communities.

He stressed: “However the Comhairle would wish to see this long overdue measure introduced as soon as possible.

“If it is of benefit and provides value for money why wait until October 2015.”
