Serious money raised in charity joke-telling event                    13/3/14

Nearly £12,700 has been raised for island charities by a Lewis man who staged a record-breaking joke-telling event.

Donald “Maroot” Macleod relayed 580 gags within a hour in the Park Bar in Glasgow, beating the 549  target held by Australian Michael Lehman in 2005. Comedian Tim Vine previously held the title with 499 jokes within the 60 minutes deadline.

The 39-year-old originally from Stornoway but now working in Glasgow is to share the cash between island organisation which support elderly, infirm and disabled people in the Western Isles.

Bethesda Care Home in Stornoway, Harris House in Tarbert, Tagsa Uibhist in Benbecula and Cobhair Bharraigh in Barra will benefit from the event.
