Around £45,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support is expected to be raised by a group of island cyclists pedalling a long distance bike ride the length of the Western Isles.

Despite headwinds, rain and miserable conditions, some 52 cyclists set off from the Butt of Lewis on Wednesday morning, arriving Castlebay, Barra, on Friday.

They braved persistently dreadful weather throughout the three-day, 170-mile challenge and all were exhausted but relieved to make it on the last stretch down the west side of Barra.

Over £30,000 has been donated via their fundraising webpage at www.justgiving.com Butt2Barra.

Other donations plus tax relief is set to boost the total by an estimated £15,000.

The cyclists are pictured at Castlebay Harbour at the end of their marathon challenge.
