Central Belt gales affect island travel links          3/1/12/

Glasgow flights for the Western Isle s have been cancelled or delayed for hours after gales bettering the Central Belt of Scotland today.

Earlier passengers were rescheduled on to alternative flights - which did not take off until winds started to ease in the afternoon. Some travellers going via Glasgow had their journey further disrupted after two blown-over lorries blocked the Kingston Bridge.

Loganair’s Barra to Balivanich service was cancelled.

The lunchtime timetabled flight from Glasgow to Stornoway is now expected to arrive on Lewis around 8pm and is estimated to touching back down at Glasgow well after 9pm. The Edinburgh service is also delayed until later tonight

This evening’s Benbecula to Glasgow plane is running about 90 minutes late but the afternoon return flight to Barra has been put off.

The MV Clansman service to Lochboisdale and Castlebay was cancelled today  while a forecasted strong gale threatens to disrupt an alternative timetable for Wednesday.

The freight ferry for Stornoway will remain in harbour tonight.

Meanwhile, another spell of wet and windy weather will affect the west coast during Wednesday.

A Force 8 or 9 gale accompanied by heavy rain showers will particularly lash the Southern Isles.

The wind will increase in speed around lunchtime tomorrow into the early hours of Thursday.

The public should be aware that rain, accompanied by strong winds, may lead to localised flooding in western areas.
