Storm Kathleen: Causeways cut off by sea surge

7 April 2024

Baleshare causeway in North Uist was under underwater this morning as Storm Kathleen arrived.

Reporting the hazardous situation, local action group, Communities Fight for Replacement of Unsafe Baleshare Causeway, urged people not to cross while waves washed over the flooded, low-lying road.

The Bràighe Road at Point in Lewis was closed by Police Scotland around 8.30am due to heavy spray and debris crashing over the sea wall.

Environment agency, SEPA, said: “On top of already high tides, Kathleen will bring a storm surge and large waves. This combination is particularly dangerous – especially around high tides.

“There is real danger to life from wave overtopping, particularly around causeways, coastal roads and paths.

“Disruption to travel and infrastructure is possible, as is isolated flooding to coastal properties and communities.”

All Western Isles ferries are cancelled in the horrendous conditions though the MV Loch Alain may attempt a sailing in the late afternoon if the wind eases.
