Estranged boyfriend fined over cat fight               9/11/14

A Western Isles man hit his girlfriend with a cat during a row after he found out she had been unfaithful and was leaving him.

Ryan Macleod left the house at Inaclete Road in Stornoway after the pair had a furious row following her confession on the evening of Friday 24 October.

The next morning he returned home and caught her packing her belongings.

The 23-year-old lost his temper and started shouting and swearing. He grabbed the cat and threw it at the woman.

Procurator fiscal David Teale told Stornoway Sheriff Court that the apprentice mechanic seized her mobile phone off her and threw it down the stairs.

Then, he picked up the pet cat and flung it at her, striking his now ex-girlfriend, said the fiscal.

Lawyer Kevin Macpherson told the court that the incident meant the end of the pair’s relationship.

He explained the woman had just returned from holiday with her family and “disclosed she had been unfaithful.”

She hadn’t expected him back in the morning and the cat incident occurred when “she was in the process of leaving and he lost his temper.”

Ryan Macleod, now of 6 North Street, Sandwick, by Stornoway, pleaded guilty to hitting his ex-partner with a cat as well as threatening her, shouting and swearing at her, throwing her belongings at her as well as throwing her mobile phone away.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined him £300 - reduced from £450 for his early plea.

The sheriff also instructed Macleod to pay £200 compensation to his former partner - to be paid at £30 per week.
