Tenders for the redevelopment of the Lews Castle grounds are being broken into smaller packages.

The works are being retendered after prices came in too high last summer.

The initial approach was not attractive to potential bidders.

One element relates to the work in the castle grounds and the other involves the restoration of historic buildings and walls.

Now the first phase of the project is being sliced into more manageable packages to see if it generates more interest from building and repair firms.

The larger contract - is now being split in two “in order to provide flexibility for interested contractors.”

The buildings lot will focus on the repair and restoration the Porters Lodge and the Boatman’s Tower.

The structures element includes work to the castle terrace, steps and bastion wall, the former private gardens, the castellated seawall and historic bridges.

Drainage works and path upgrades are being offered under a civils’ contract.

The comhairle is the designated body formally carrying out the redevelopment on behalf of the Stornoway Trust. The council is also a financial backer.

The initial phase of capital works has a total value of almost £2 million with the aim to start in the spring.

Further works are in the pipeline including the restoration of the soft landscaping and plantings in the vicinity of Lews Castle.
