5p charge for carrier bags 22/9/14
From October 20th, under the new legislation, island retailers must charge a minimum of 5p for every single use carrier bag used – both by customers in store and those used in home deliveries.
A record of the numbers of bags supplied and the charge monies received must also
be kept by retailers employing 10 or more full-
The Comhairle is responsible for enforcing the shop’s legal obligation to charge.
The cash raised by the charge will belong to the businesses, but the Scottish Government hopes the shops will donate the proceeds to good causes, particularly those with an environmental focus.
