The Carloway Historical Society also hope to relocate into the redeveloped building.
Mairi Steele, secretary of the Carloway Community Association, said they were “thrilled” their application was successful.
She said: “The funding will enable us to buy the former school on behalf of the community and deliver much needed facilities for local people – making the Carloway area a better place to live and work.”
“In very many senses this will help bring the heart back to the community which was dealt a major blow when the school closed in 2013.”
“The longer term vision for the site is to develop the rural life centre into a community owned and managed asset that will attract visitors, create jobs and generate income that will be reinvested in the community.”
“This is a massive boost for Carloway and surrounding communities.
“On top of securing ownership of the former school, the funding will allow us to engage an architect to provide designs for the centre as well as professional project management support.”
