Carloway to host Independence debate    17/4/14

Carloway Community Association is hosting a public debate on Scottish Independence.

The Friday evening event will be chaired by Angus Macdonald of BBC Alba with a panel of two pro-independence speakers and two pro-union speakers.

It is expected that former MSP for the Western Isles Alasdair Morrison and former Government minister Brian Wilson will be arguing the case for Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom while Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan and local businessman Gordon Maclennan will be making the case for Scottish independence.

Iain Murdo Macmillan, chair of the Community Association, believes the night will prove popular with members of the public.

Mr Macmillan said: “Over recent years Carloway has hosted a number of hustings and debates for local and national elections and we want to continue this tradition by hosting an independence debate.

“Everyone in Scotland should be engaged in this debate, not least those living in rural areas like the Western Isles.

“We are delighted that Angus Macdonald and the panel members have agreed to participate in this event.

“It is open to everyone and we would encourage as many as possible to make their way to Carloway this Friday evening. Ask questions, get involved and make the most of the opportunity to quiz both campaigns. It should be a good night.”

Tea and coffee will be served at the end of the formal debate to allow members of the public to discuss issues more informally with the panel members. The debate takes place at 8.30pm on Friday in Carloway Community Centre, beside the Carloway School buildings.
