A careless driving motorist was traced by a number plate which fell off in a collision with a fence in Newmarket, Lewis.

Jamie Maclean failed to stop and did not report the accident which occurred around 9pm on 8 February, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Maclean had left the the roadway and hit a fence around a house. He then drove off.

The householder called the police the next morning and contacted police who found the number plate by the damaged fence, the court heard.

Lawyer Luke O’ Curry said Maclean of Brue, Lewis, had misjudged a bend in the road in the dark.

Maclean who admitted careless driving and failing to report the incident was fined a total of £280 to be paid at £10 per fortnight.

He also received eight penalty points on his licence.
