An islander who denied dangerous driving pleaded guilty to the lower charge of careless driving when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court on Friday.

The court heard a couple with their 10 month-old child in a pushchair were alarmed when Lee McBratney of 18 Constable Road, Stornoway, too fast round a corner onto Mossend Road, Stornoway, at 5.30pm on 26 June.

He accepted he accelerated harshly and caused his car to skid.

Procurator fiscal Karen Smith said they saw the apprentice joiner’s black coloured car drive at speed, veer onto the wrong side of the road, almost clipping the kerb.

There would have been a collision if there had been a vehicle coming the other way, believed the couple, she told the court.

They noted the registration number and police spoke to McBratney later that night.

The fiscal said the 20-year-old was “somewhat evasive” and told police he was driving at just 20mph.

The court heard McBratney had since had his licence revoked for other offences.

Sheriff David Sutherland fined him £500 and imposed five penalty points on his licence.
