The latest Covid-19 case in the Western Isles, reported on Thursday, is a staff member in the Sacred Heart care home.

The worker in the South Uist facility was diagnosed yesterday.

Staff and residents in care homes are regularly tested.

An incident management meeting was held today.

The care home in Daliburgh was a focus of concern over the outbreak with the virus affecting a number of staff and residents.

With some of the facility’s local workforce self-isolating, a number of care personnel were drafted in from Stornoway to cover shifts.

Some 50 cases have been confirmed across Uist within the last three weeks. Up until then there were zero cases in the area.

Until this week Western Isles was the only area in Scotland not to report a Covid related death.

A resident in Sacred Heart care home died on Thursday morning. They contracted the virus soon after a cluster emerged on 25 September.

Recent testing returned a negative result but a death within 28 days of a positive test is confirmed as a Covid-19 death by Public Health Scotland regardless of any other contributory factors.
