Car slides into the water in Stornoway harbour

21 March 2017

A car has been recovered out of the sea in Stornoway harbour.

The vehicle slid down the slipway - slippery with seaweed and algae - at Cuddy Point on Monday evening.

Apparently, the male driver was not inside the car when it landed in the water.

He dialled the emergency services on 999.

The call was received at 7.15pm and police were alerted.

Coastal coastguard teams from Stornoway and South Lochs were also on scene to provide safety cover.

It happened that Stornoway RNLI was out on exercise at the time and the lifeboat stood-by but was not required.

A local man, believed to be a Stornoway Trust worker, towed the car out of the water.

A Stornoway coastguard spokesperson said the vehicle was unoccupied.

She said: “We received a 999 call from a man at Cuddy Point reporting his car had slid off the slip into the water.”
