Concerns over cancellation of car ferry service            10/11/14

A group made up of local public and private bodies, voluntary sector partners and the community has raised concerns about serious disruptions planned for the Stornoway ferry service.

For up to six weeks early in the New Year there will be no car ferry between Lewis and Ullapool.

The linkspan in the Wester Ross port will be out of action while a replacement is installed.

No alternative route for vehicles and freight transport has been announced.

The  Outer Hebrides Community Planning Partnership has now added its voice to the growing concerns.

Its chairman, Cllr Angus Campbell, said: "There is no doubt that the work to the linkspan in Ullapool is both necessary, and will help to make the turnaround much swifter and more efficient.

However, we are very disappointed with the lack of communication from CMAL and Cal Mac on this issue.

“We still do not know when exactly this six week period will come into force or what alternative provision will be made.

“This is very concerning and I would encourage Cal Mac to discuss their plans with our communities as soon as possible, particularly as this is a lifeline service.”
