Several car smashes occur at same location in wintry weather

11 January 2017

A cluster of car smashes occurred after a sudden hail shower at the Laxdale Bridge area in Lewis tonight.

Vehicles lost their grip on the road when the surface rapidly became slippery following the wintry squall.

Western Isles police said they dealt with several traffic collisions at the location.

A police spokesman said the smashes followed a “very heavy hail shower.”

Police alerted the council and a gritter later treated the carriageway.

The police spokesman urged island motorists to drive carefully with the Met Office issuing warnings of more freezing weather.

He stressed: “Drivers should be aware of the weather forecasts and drive to the conditions.”
