Car crash driver in “critical” condition     16/6/14

 

A 24-year-old islander was in a critical condition in hospital last night (Sun) following a car crash on Lewis.

 

Iain Gillies of Skigersta in the Ness was very seriously injured when his green Ford Focus smashed into a stone wall.

 

The accident occurred near to his home shortly before on Saturday morning.

 

No other vehicle was involved and he was the only person inside the car.

 

It is believed Mr Gillies’ heart stopped and he was revived with from the local Ness firecrew which arrived within minutes.

 

Ambulance staff took over and the badly hurt man was rushed to hospital in Stornoway.

Later, he was urgently airlifted to the intensive care unit in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

 

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow said: “Mr Gilles is in a critical condition.”

 

Iain Gilles is a mechanic with Scotts’ Garage in Stornoway. He previously worked with Kiwi’s.

 

He lives in the village of Skigersta with his girlfriend, not far from Knockaird where his parents reside

 

The family are very well known in Ness as his father Iain is the former head teacher at Lionel School. His younger brother Donald plays for the senior Ness football team.

 

Both lanes of the main road on the A857 were closed by the Cross Skigersta junction with traffic diverted diversions through side roads circling neighbouring villages.

 

Specialist police investigators from Dingwall were summoned to the island to investigate the incident.

 

Police request that any witnesses to the collision contact them on 101.
