An islander was spotted acting suspiciously when he went to post drugs to his girlfriend.

Stornoway Sheriff Court heard Neil Macinnes asked counter staff at Stornoway post office about sending an urgent package to an address in England, saying it had to arrive the following morning.

Procurator fiscal Keren Smith said he picked up a special delivery bag, went out and returned. He went up to the counter, took a pair of sports socks out of his jacket and placed them inside the plastic bag to the counter. He then filled in the name and address.

Post office staff were suspicious said the fiscal, as it "seemed odd sending a pair of socks by special delivery."

Police were alerted and an officer with a sniffer dog attended.

The dog "indicated the package contained more than just socks," the fiscal said.

Macinnes's lawyer said a small amount of 3.4 gramme of cannabis worth around £20 was found.

The solicitor said Macinnes' girlfriend phone him to send cannabis after she was bailed to an relative's address in England, following a court appearance.

Macinnes, of Keith Street, Stornoway, pleaded guilty to supplying drugs while on bail.

The 42-year-old also admitted a breach of the peace charge on a separate occasion by grabbing a mobile phone off his girlfriend and smashing it.

Sheriff David Sutherland sentenced him to a two year community payback order which includes 200 hours of unpaid community service work. In addition, curfew was imposed on Macinnes, requiring him to stay at home between 9pm and 6am every night for the next 12 months.
