Stricken trawler rescued off Lewis        12/2/14

A fishing boat at risk of sinking was rescued after the maritime emergency services went to her aid on Wednesday.

The Campbeltown-owned trawler MFV Fear Not started taking in water while some four miles off Gravir on the east coast of Lewis shortly before 9am.

Though still registered in Peterhead, the 120 tonne prawn boat was sold to the west coast in very recent years.

Her skipper alerted Stornoway coastguards and another vessel, the MFV Resolute, which was  some some five miles south east of her, diverted course to stand-by the stricken trawler.

The Stornoway rescue helicopter sped to the emergency and lowered a salvage pump onto the fishing boat which had six crew onboard, mostly of Filipino nationality.

Stornoway RNLI lifeboat was soon on the scene after a 15 mile high speed race through a bouncing swell.

The lifeboat’s emergency pump was also airlifted onto the Fear Not.

Lifeboat crew secured a towrope onto the disabled boat and pulled her into Stornoway harbour, safely berthing alongside Esplanade Quay around 1.40pm.
