Hebrides News

A full inquiry has been launched after a ferry crashed into the Lochmaddy marina and rammed into the shore on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at 11.05am as the inbound MV Hebrides, travelling from Tarbert, Harris, was approaching the linkspan.

Cal Mac said a "technical failure led to the vessel being unable to reduce speed sufficiently for the routine docking procedures."

The vessel sped ahead towards shallow water. She veered to port and struck both yacht pontoons in Lochmaddy marina. She also hit the seabed when going on the shoreline on an islet in the harbour.

A Cal Mac spokesperson said: "No one was injured and the vessel's hull remains intact."

A total of 76 passengers and crew were on board, as well as 13 cars, a lorry and a motorhome.

The vessel is now alongside at Lochmaddy.

All passengers and vehicles have been disembarked and alternative routes for all those affected are being investigated.

Cal Mac said a team of divers is on its way to make underwater investigations of the hull.

Travel on the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy route is disrupted and likely to remain so for some time.

Sailings will be affected for at least two days as the investigation is carried out.
