CalMac has told foot passengers to check-in 15 minutes earlier than usual when travelling from Stornoway on MV Loch Seaforth.

The temporary policy came into effect this week due to broken lifts onboard the vessel.

The port-side passenger lifts are out of action due to a defect. These are the lifts on the pier side of the Loch Seaforth when she is berthed stern-in at Stornoway.

Ullapool check-in times remain the same.

No timeframe to fix the fault is available.

Previously, passengers travelling without a vehicle could check in up to half an hour before the ship was due to leave Stornoway.

Now they are told to check-in no later than 45 minutes prior to the ship’s timetabled departure from the island port.

Latecomers risk missing the boat if their passenger space is reallocated.

CalMac said: “The port side passenger lifts on board MV Loch Seaforth are out of operation until further notice.

“Starboard lifts remain in use however wait times may be extended.

“Passengers requiring assistance should make themselves known to staff prior to departure. Ullapool check-in times are not impacted.”

Travellers continue to board and exit MV Loch Seaforth at Stornoway via the linkspan and car deck while the passenger access system is out of service.

A van is deployed to transfer luggage onboard at both sides of the Minch. Under the arrangements, passengers hand their bags and suitcases over upon check-in. The luggage van is driven on to the vessel and locked. The driver does not accompany the vehicle on the voyage and CalMac keeps secure the transport of keys. After arrival at the other side the van is driven off and luggage deposited at a passenger pick-up / drop-off point.
