Barra’s mainland ferry service is up and running again after an engine breakdown.
Sending MV Isle of Lewis to Stornoway for repairs curtailed disruption to two days.
Work on her faulty port engine was undertaken by Lewis based engineering contractor
while the ship was berthed at the Arnish quayside. The pier was immediately available
and did not block other ferry, cruise or shipping movements.
Repairs were completed last night and the ship sailed at dawn this morning, heading
out of Stornoway harbour around 6am.
She made good speed on the voyage south and loaded for Oban following her arrival.
The return leg will arrive in Barra late tonight and, in light of MV Isle of Mull’s
heavily limited passenger capacity for South Uist, MV Loch Alainn will provide a
connecting Sound of Barra service for Uist-bound traffic travelling through Barra
.
The Loch Alainn will also operate a early morning link on Thursday and Friday. between
Uist and the Castlebay ferry, departing Eriskay at 5.30am
