Turbines, what turbines?                   20/2/12

Sirs,

I am a little confused why your readers Calum Macleod of Callanish and Hilda Blake from east of Steimreway wish to launch an astonishing attack against me on the basis of the aesthetics of wind turbines.

My letter of 16 February makes absolutely no mention of wind turbines. Nor does it even make any mention of clean, renewable energy let alone the pros and cons of electrical generation through the power of the wind.

I would be grateful if you would kindly allow me to re-emphasise my point through your electrically generated communication medium: How do the Callanish stones benefit the economy of Great Bernera?

Mr Macleod quite correctly highlights that there is a distinct lack of tourism infrastructure in the islands but I would query his assertion that thousands flock from the stones to the jewel of Hebridean beaches at Bosta. I have rarely ever seen more than half a dozen people there at a time.

It is true also that the walk from Tigh Calum Sgàire to Ceann an Tòib via Shealbhal Bhiorach and the great wall of Tobson is indeed something special as it was there I saw my first pair of golden eagles about twenty feet from me when I was twelve.

The harsh truth is though that this walk like practically everything else generates no income for the dwindling population of this neglected place.
