Cal Mac winners take to the stage              18/7/14

The winners of a competition run by ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne to give aspiring singer-songwriters the chance to play at the Hebridean Celtic and Tiree Music Festivals are to take the stage this week.

Sophie Rogers will play at the Heb Celt Festival in Stornoway and Leanne Smith will play at Tiree Music Festival after securing their places at a competition at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow in June.

Sophie and Leanne beat six other finalists, whittled down from more than 50 entries, for the opportunity to play a live half hour slot in front of hundreds of festival goers.

Cathy Craig, CalMac's commercial director said: "The CalMac Culture competition may not be everyone’s idea of what a ferry operator does, but both events are hugely dependent on our services to take festival goers to and from Tiree and Lewis so there was a great opportunity to use our sponsorship of both festivals to create a unique opportunity.

“All aspiring musicians will dream of playing at a Summer music festival and we are delighted to have given Sophie and Leanne the chance to do so. We hope everyone attending will give them a welcome to remember.”

Sophie said:” I can't wait for the Hebridean Celtic Festival this week! I'm thrilled to be opening the new acoustic stage on Friday!”

Leanne said: “I'm so excited, it's an amazing opportunity and I can't wait to start my island adventure. It's my first time on Tiree and I'm really excited to explore the island and play at the award winning Tiree Music Festival.”
