Buy local produce say MPs 11/2/13
In the wake of the growing horsemeat scandal, SNP MP Angus B MacNeil is highlighting the many positive aspects of buying local produce and supporting local food producers.
Angus MacNeil said: “This latest alarm with horsemeat is a stark reminder to us all about the importance of buying local produce.
“Scotland and indeed the Outer Hebrides produce so many great products.
“I am aware that local butchers have seen a rise in trade since the outbreak of the
horsemeat scandal. When buying local produce we are confident about what we are eating
and at the same time contributing to the local economy, a win-
Mr MacNeil also welcomed the announcement from Sainbury’s who are supporting lamb producers by offering a minimum deadweight price for lambs supplied by members of Sainsbury’s Lamb Development Group.
Mr MacNeil added: “Considering the popularity of traceable quality Scottish lamb, I welcome this move from Sainsbury and I would encourage other supermarkets to support local producers.”
Alasdair Allan MSP said: "The Western Isles produce great lamb, and anything that supermarkets can do to promote that locally and nationally is to be welcomed.
“There remains much more we can do to highlight the produce that the isles can boast.
“That means we should give more thought to local branding as well as the protection of local names like Stornoway black pudding."
