A new bus timetable for Barra and Vatersay will commence this month.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has awarded the public bus service contract to Hector MacNeil of Tangasdale.

The tender followed a participatory budgeting process which aims to allow users in how the services should be prioritised and delivered. The council redesign the contract specification to best meet these outputs.

The specification of the contract is also designed to allow periodic reviews of the service routes and timetables to adapt to the customer’s needs as well as changes to the ferry and air service timetables.

These reviews will follow a consultation process arranged by Hector MacNeil seeking the views of the bus users and feedback from both Castlebay and Northbay Community Councils.

The timetable - which starts on 18 August - will have a range of bookable services aimed at meeting customer needs and minimising wasted fixed journeys where no passengers are carried.

The integrated school and public services will continue to be operated by R MacMillan serving Eoligarry, East Barra and Vatersay on school day journeys.

All the Barra and Vatersay bus contracts will be in place until late March 2020.
