BT working to improve broadband speeds          21/10/14

Telecoms giant BT is undertaking engineering work to improve internet speeds on Lewis.

Problems in broadband services have badly affected some users with download speeds reduced to a crawl at times.

BT said it is carrying out work to freeing up capacity on broadband links and increase speeds.

The utility is moving and rebalancing heavily loaded elements of the network to reduce and remove traffic on their broadband lines in the islands.

Following his representations, BT told MP Angus MacNeil that engineering work is still ongoing.

Mr MacNeill said: “BT say that this is a complex exercise that must be carried out using a phased approach.

“It is this phased approached that is unfortunately causing difficulties to broadband users but BT hope that once this is over, broadband users will have an improved service.

“From what BT tell me, I am hopeful that broadband users in the islands will see an improvement to the service over the next few weeks. We shall be keeping an eye on the situation.”
