Western Isles residents are being targetted by scammers claiming to be from BT.

The callers state that people's internet connection is affecting the BT service but that they can resolve the problem by talking you through a series of steps which ultimately gives them access to your laptop or computer.

The fraudsters may pretend to end the call and provide a phone number to check their authenticity. But they keep the line open and the victim is unwittingly still talking to the scammers.

A trading standards spokesperson said: “Our best advice is to end the call. To be safe - wait around 10 minutes before you use the phone again in case the scammers have kept the line open.”

BT advises not to go onto a website, type anything into a computer, install software or follow any other instruction from someone who calls out of the blue.
