BROODSTOCK OPERATIVE, LANGASS
(£16,830 -
Required for our breeding program, based at Langass Hatchery in North Uist. Our Broodstock Operatives are responsible for the careful rearing of salmon from green egg through the fry, parr and smolt stages, prior to the transfer to sea. This varied and highly interesting role includes daily fish husbandry duties, environmental monitoring, health checks and size grading as the juvenile salmon develop and care of potential broodstock at a marine facility.
Applicants should be highly motivated and dedicated individuals with a keen attention to detail. They should be comfortable working in a sometimes challenging outdoor environment, be able to operate well as part of a small focused team and work flexibly to meet the demands of the job. Previous breeding program / freshwater aquaculture experience would be useful but is not essential as training will be provided. Strong technical aptitude or a scientific interest and knowledge would also be beneficial. Hours are 40 per week, Monday to Friday plus weekend working and alarm call out duties on a rota basis, usually one in every three weeks. NB Due to the nature of Alarm Duty applicants must live within 20 minutes from site or be available to stay on site when on alarm duty and when on the weekend rota.
