North Uist motorists had an unpleasant surprise with a broken cattle grid on the main road threatening to damage vehicles.

A main section of the metal grid at Claddach Carinish became dislodged and was protruding at a hazardous angle.

One car was badly damaged when it hit the obstruction in the dark on Friday morning.

One motorist said the grid is in poor condition but nothing gets done about it.

He said: “Money must be made available to get it replaced before there is a very serious accident and someone gets badly hurt or killed.”
