High waves are likely to break over coastal roads in the Western Isles tonight.

Environment agency Sepa has renewed a flood alert because a heavy swell and gale force winds expected to pile up tonight’s (Mon) very high tide.

The alert stressed: “Gale force winds will result in high waves leading to the potential for wave and spray overtopping in coastal areas and across causeways, particularly those exposed to the south east.

High water is due to peak between 8.30pm and 9.30pm across the islands this evening. Onshore winds gusting to around 50mph may be experienced at the same time.

Earlier, police patrolled the Bràighe roadway on Lewis where heavy spray crashed over the sea wall depositing seaweed and debris in its wake.

Spray also came over the harbour wall at North Beach Street in Stornoway this morning.

In South Uist, the roof of a bus shelter was damaged by strong winds.

Eoiligarry and Castlebay Schools were shut today as was the Children’s Centre in Barra because of the bad weather.

Another gale is expected from Tuesday night.
