Wild seas driven by a southerly gale resulted in the closure of the Braighe causeway at Point, Lewis, being closed for a lengthy period on Tuesday morning.
The direction of the wind pushed the incoming high tide ahead causing waves and debris to spill over the sea wall and onto the roadway.
Police and coastguards monitored the situation.
A long queue of traffic built up on both sides until the tide receded. Vehicles were initially allowed through in a single file convoy until the roadway was cleared of debris and fully reopened.
