Edward Jackson

The body of a man found in the North Harris hills has been confirmed to be of missing hill walker Edward Jackson.

Mr Jackson from Preston was found at Sgaoth Ard, north of Tarbert.

The difficult terrain hampered the recovery of his body from a ledge down a gully on the high ridge it is understood.

Mr Jackson, 55, who was staying in the Harris Hotel was last seen at the back of 9am on Saturday morning - the final day of his holiday - setting off on the Urgha moor path to Maraig.

Hotel staff raised the alarm when there was no sign of him on Sunday.

A large scale search involving the coastguard helicopter, and coastguard and HebSAR volunteers took place over the area.

Police dogs and their handlers covered the route Mr Jackson was believed to have taken while Leverburgh RNLI lifeboat  searched around the bays.

Mr Jackson was found at the highest of a group of hills on the south side of the main road between Maraig and Ceann an Orca quarry.

A police spokesman confirmed the body was officially identified as Mr Jackson.
