The body of an elderly man has been found in a freshwater loch in Berneray off North Uist.

A large scale search was launched when the 73-year-old was reported missing on Wednesday.

Coastguard teams, a helicopter and Leverburgh RNLI lifeboat were involved in looking for the man.

The search was stood down at 6pm when a body was discovered.

Police Scotland said next of kin have been informed.

Western Isles Area Commander Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod said: "Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the family and friends of the man who sadly died.

"I would also like to thank members of the public and other services for their assistance during the search and rescue operation.

"Our enquiries are ongoing although there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course."
