Blustery conditions continued on Monday after a weekend of stormy weather.

Ferries which were cancelled on Sunday are plying away to clear the backlog of vehicles and passengers.

Ships scurried for refuge and numerous ferries were cancelled as unseasonably severe gales and wild seas battered the west coast on Sunday.

Thunder and lighting as well as rain accompanied the bad weather.

Instead of battling through high waves on a voyage between Norway and the Isle of Man, the passenger vessel MV Star Legend ran for shelter in Broadbay on the east coast of Lewis. She was joined by a Norwegian-flagged tug which waited for the strong headwinds to ease before continuing to Glasgow.

Cruise ship MV Deutschland cancelled her call to Stornoway as conditions were too hazardous to allow passengers to disembark on Sunday.

Countless travellers had their journeys disrupted and were forced to cancel hotel reservations in the Hebrides. Other tourists were stuck on the islands.

To beat the onset of the weather, some ferries left hours earlier than scheduled on Saturday.
