The GMB union is meeting this afternoon with Scottish economy secretary Keith Brown over BiFab which operates the Arnish yard on Lewis.

The future is looking bleak as order book is empty and the company is finishing off its final contract.

This year there are a number of Scottish windfarm tenders which would be suitable for the firm.

A Scottish Government spokesman said regular discussions over BiFab have taken place since November.

The GMB union said manufacturing offshore turbines for renewable schemes in Scottish waters would suit the company.

A Scottish Government spokesman said regular discussions over BiFab have taken place since November.

He said: “After helping BiFab to avoid the threat of administration, the Scottish Government has been in regular contact with the company, investors and relevant parties to ensure a strong, sustainable future for BiFab and the people it employs.

“The Scottish Government and our agencies are working with the management team at BiFab to secure new business and investment in the company, and through this we hope to provide the best means of creating and safeguarding jobs for the longer term for communities in both Fife and the Isle of Lewis.”

Arnish is set to shut soon as its very last structure for the Beatrice windfarm order is completed while BiFab’s yards in Fife will be finished at the end of March.

The vast majority of the Lewis workforce has been paid off with only a small squad left to paint the final structure. The yard will be placed on care-and-maintenance.
