Donald Trump’s sister has donated £160,000 to help expand the Bethesda care home in Stornoway.

Maryanne Trump Barry, a senior judge of the United States Court of Appeals gave the money in memory of her mother, Maryann Macleod Trump, who was originally from Tong.

The donation plus a £200,000 award from the Scottish Government will go towards internal construction work to develop the upper floor of the care home.

It means, when finished, an additional nine people at a time can be cared for in the home. The first three years of the running costs of the beds will be met jointly by NHS Western Isles and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

Carol Somerville, Bethesda general manager, explained: “Since the completion of the extensive refurbishment and extension of the nursing home, completed in 2010, the Bethesda trustees have fought hard to secure the capital and revenue funding to complete the upper floor of the nursing home, to provide an additional nine nursing home beds for the benefit of the community.

“We are delighted to have worked alongside Maryanne Trump Barry in order to make a lasting memorial to her mother.”
