Worst of ex-hurricane Bertha misses Western Isles, hits mainland   10/8/14

The Western Isles is just about the only place not affected by the worst of the tail end of Hurricane Bertha which is brining severe weather as it crosses the UK today (Sun).

Two amber weather warnings are in force in Scotland while the rest of the country has been issued with a yellow warning of rain.

Heavy rain and high winds will affect the islands on Monday with Uist receiving gale force winds and rain for much if the day.

The low pressure system moved in from the southwest overnight on Saturday into Sunday bringing flooding, heavy rain, wild seas and strong winds to the mainland.

The heavy rain will continue to move north and east during the course of Sunday, with strong and gusty winds becoming the main feature for most areas with gusts of 40 - 50 mph expected quite widely.

The weather may cause disruption to people travelling to and from mainland ferry ports.
