Bernera’s highest hill 8/6/14
Sirs,
Stuart Simpson is to be applauded for his efforts in climbing all the highest
hills in the inhabited islands of the Outer Hebrides. I'm not quite sure however
who his team consulted to come up with the name "Hill With no Apparent Name" for
the highest point on Great Bernera. Perhaps it was someone with a highly tenuous
connection to Bernera like the island's most noteworthy absentee crofter Alistair
Darling (Scottish based politics being the other tenuous connection he possesses).
Anyway, to put the record straight the island's highest point is called Sealabhal
Bhiorach. Although it is only 87 metres high it offers stunning views particularly
to the north west: The expansive North Atlantic, the Flannan Isles and Uig. My favourite
view however is looking down Tob Valasay over to Conostoum and the far off Harris
range. Lovely.
I hope Stuart enjoys his visit to Sealabhal Bhiorach and makes lots
from this worthwhile venture.
