A £15,000 review of the Benbecula air service is to be commissioned.

The current contract with Loganair is due to expire next year and the outcome of the study will determine options for tendering the continuation of the plane service.

A previous review in 2012 led to the abolishment of the Barra - Benbecula flights plus the reduction of the Stornoway link to three days a week.

Outside private consultants will be asked to look at passenger numbers per flight per route, the nature of trips and subsidies paid to Loganair at present.

In the summer public meetings will be held in Stornoway and Benbecula to seek feedback on the suitability of current services, reliability of the airline, ticket prices, as well as timetabling and flight frequency issues.

Other airlines will be contacted to see if they would consider bidding against Loganair on the route.

The council also plans to seek prices for a number of options during the tender. This could include a proposal for a single daily return flight between Stornoway and Benbecula for five days a week.
