The deadline for voting in the Barvas Estate land buyout ballot is today.

Ballot papers must be handed to the council offices in Stornoway by 4pm.

The counting of votes takes place in Barvas Hall at 7.30pm tonight - the event is open to the public.

Purchase funding would be available from the Scottish Land Fund and from Western Isles Council.

Crofters’ rights are not affected by any buyout.

The 36,000 acre estate includes the remote offshore islands of North Rona and Sulasgeir.

Proposals for development in the first five years of community ownership include setting up a 50kW wind turbine scheme, small scale woodland and a recycling facility.

In addition, it is planned to improve peat and machair roads.

Another initiative would be to hiring a tourism development officer and increase the number of visitors to the area.
