The community of Barvas and Shawbost have voted to buy their land.

Some 83% of the people who voted backed purchasing the land and certain assets of Barvas Estate.

Exactly 500 ballot slips were returned out of a 919-strong electorate.

417 residents voted yes, in favour of the buyout. There were 80 people against.  Three spoilt voting slips were rejected.

The ballot question was over purchasing the land and salmon hatchery - and excluding property and fishing rights.

A feasibility study concluded this approach would allow a community-run body to run at a profit.

Despite its name the 36,000 acre estate includes very little of Barvas. It stretches down through Brue, Arnol and Bragar, and also takes in much of Shawbost.

The remote offshore islands of North Rona and Sulasgeir are also part of the estate.
