Urras Sgire Oighreachd Bharabhais (USOB) has been awarded £715,000 for a community buyout of the Barvas Estate on Lewis.

The Scottish Land Fund backing will allow the local community to purchase 14,000 hectares of croft land and a salmon hatchery.

Angus MacLeod of Urras Sgire Oighreachd Bharabhais Community Company, said: “All the Directors of the USOB Community Company are delighted with the Scottish Land Fund award.

"This new funding heralds a welcome chance for Barvas Estate residents to decide on future community matters in a progressive manner.

Despite its name the 36,000 acre estate includes very little of Barvas. It stretches down through Brue, Arnol and Bragar, and also takes in much of Shawbost.

The remote offshore islands of North Rona and Sulasgeir are also part of the estate.
