Next week's planned ferry strike risks affecting Barra’s annual half marathon, preventing hundreds of visitors from getting to the island.

The RMT union has called a strike for Friday when mainland runners have booked the ferry to participate in the following day's round-island race.

The majority of 280 competitors may be unable to travel if the ship is stuck in port.

Last minute cancellations would create a financial headache for hotel and B&B premises.

Councillor Donnie Steele has written to Cal Mac chief executive, Martin Dorchester, urging “speedy negotiations to settle the row.”

Mr Steele wrote: “As an Unite shop steward I understand the frustration and concerns of my RMT comrades, but on this occasion I must speak out as councillor for Barra, Vatersay, Eriskay and South Uist.

“This will be highly damaging to the Isle of Barra, their hoteliers and B&B owners - as the now famous Barrathon takes place on Saturday 27th and participants were due to travel on the 26th.

“The end of school term also coincides with the planned industrial action and many families throughout the Western Isles are due to leave on holiday.”

Both sides hope that last ditch talks next week may find common ground to resolve the dispute about eroding crew's job conditions and pensions.
