Councillors should “examine their conscience” 16/2/13
Sirs,
The community of Uist and Barra are still reeling from the impact of the news that
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, supported by the Uist and Barra Councillors (with the
exception of Donald Manford) voted to abolish Barra's lifeline air service.
Various excuses have been trundled out by the Comhairle over the past forty eight
hours in an attempt to justify their decision - mainly insufficient usage of the
service. Are we now to understand that this ruling will include our ferries and
bus service? Should we be concerned that our entire transport service will be in
jeopardy when we experience "slack" times.
Surely a lifeline service is not dependent on frequency of usage but on the security
its existence provides in our hour of need. I suggest our "worthy" councillors examine
their conscience and rescind their decision by returning our air service.
