Grant for youth club bus                      10/9/14

BBC Children in Need is helping youngsters in Barra and Vatersay get to their youth club after Comhairle cuts threatened a bus service.

Some 95% of children aged 5-12 years attended a youth club run Barra Children’s Centre in Castlebay.

But, without any pubic transport in the evenings, many rely on the chartered bus service for travel.

A BBC Children in Need grant will subside the service and prevent a hefty fare increase which risked disencouraging youngsters from going to youth club.

The award of £3,442 will also pay for three sessional youth workers in addition to providing a Wii games console and games.

Abigail Treffry, Development Manager at Barra Children’s Centre said: “Many of those travel to sessions using our chartered bus service which we could no longer afford to run when a local authority transport subsidy was cut.

“Thankfully, BBC Children in Need stepped in and ensured that we could continue to deliver and improve Youth Club sessions.”

Barra Children’s Centre has also been awarded £2794 by People’s Postcode Trust to support the costs of running Little Adventurers under 5’s active play sessions in the new extension to its premises, expected ot be completed in late October.

Funding will pay for a sessional play leader for one year and the purchase of outdoor and indoor play equipment including wheeled toys, water play, den building, and balance equipment along with outdoor blackboards and a new storage shed.
